Our Calculation Methodology & Data Sources

OmniConverter is committed to mathematical accuracy, transparent data sourcing, and honest editorial standards. This page explains exactly how our conversion calculations work, where our data comes from, and how we maintain accuracy across all tool categories.

1. Unit Conversion Methodology

All unit conversions on OmniConverter use a standardised pivot-unit architecture. This means every unit within a category is first converted to a common base unit (the "pivot"), and then from the pivot to the target unit. This two-step approach eliminates accumulated rounding errors that occur when chaining direct unit-to-unit formulas.

Pivot Units by Category

Primary Standards Reference

Our unit constants are sourced from and cross-referenced with the following internationally authoritative standards bodies:

Temperature Conversion

Temperature conversions use the Kelvin pivot with the following exact formulae:

Celsius → Kelvin: K = °C + 273.15
Fahrenheit → Kelvin: K = (°F − 32) × (5/9) + 273.15
Rankine → Kelvin: K = °R × (5/9)
Kelvin → Celsius: °C = K − 273.15
Kelvin → Fahrenheit: °F = (K − 273.15) × (9/5) + 32

2. Currency Exchange Rate Methodology

OmniConverter provides mid-market indicative exchange rate calculations for informational and reference purposes. Our currency conversion tools are not financial instruments, payment processors, or live trading feeds.

What "Mid-Market Rate" Means

The mid-market rate (also called the interbank rate) is the midpoint between the buy and sell prices of two currencies on the global foreign exchange market. It is the most accurate benchmark rate and is used by financial institutions, Reuters, Bloomberg, and comparison services as the reference benchmark. Retail banks, card processors, and currency exchange services typically apply a markup of 1–4% above this rate, which is how they generate revenue on currency transactions.

Offline Baseline Rate Disclosure

OmniConverter is a client-side web application. In offline or browser-cached mode, the currency converter uses built-in baseline reference rates that are updated at publishing time. These offline baseline rates may not reflect the current live mid-market rate.

For precise, live financial transactions, we recommend verifying the current rate through a live financial data provider before executing any international money transfer, payment, or currency purchase.

Indian Subunit Note

Our Indian unit guides (Bigha, Guntha, Gaj, Bigha-to-square-feet) document the most commonly used conversion values. These traditional units vary by Indian state and regional practice. Our guides clearly indicate the specific regional convention used and note where state-level variation exists. Always verify land measurements with local official records (Tehsil or Revenue Department) for legal or commercial property transactions.

3. Client-Side Processing & Privacy Architecture

All calculations on OmniConverter — including unit conversions, file format transformations, and time zone lookups — are executed entirely within your web browser using HTML5 JavaScript, Web Workers, Canvas API, and Blob API. No calculation data, input values, or uploaded files are transmitted to any remote server.

This architecture means:

4. Editorial Accuracy Standards

All blog guides and conversion reference articles published on OmniConverter follow a consistent editorial process:

  1. Formula Verification: Every conversion formula is cross-referenced with the primary standards references listed above before publication.
  2. Cross-Check Calculation: Results are cross-checked against at least two independent authoritative sources (e.g., NIST, BIPM, UK government standards).
  3. Disclosure of Approximations: Where an answer depends on real-time data (exchange rates, timezone DST rules) or regional variation (Indian land units), this is clearly disclosed in the article body.
  4. Date-Stamped Updates: Articles include a Last Updated date. Exchange rate reference figures in articles reflect the rate at the time of writing and are approximate.
